Variables & Expressions

Is there a way to keep a Variable stored for the duration of one page call ?

For example: a Charisma Score is Generated, like +4;
then reused later in the page so that Charisma skills like Deception, Charm, Diplomacy, etc.
are calculated with at least a +4 ; Like the skill would be somewhat like {Charm (#expr CHA + Dice.D6) } meaning a 5 to 10 result
Everything I've tried so far is a new randomization or new lookup.

Code inefficiencies?

I'm curious - how are those code inefficiencies coming along? Are they on the radar? Also, can we get a help topic on the kind of parameters that can go into the sgdisplay subroutine? I can see you can feed it a number of iterations - is there anything else you can feed into it? Ryan Stoughton 22:01, 26 November 2007 (PST)

I did make some changes to the code that massively cut down the database usage. Re: sgdisplay, the only parameter right now is iterations, but that's obviously open to future development.

I'm going to change hosts sometime in the next week or so - I have had consistent slowness with this site no matter what I do to improve things, so I think it has to be my hosting. --Dave Younce 09:41, 27 November 2007 (PST)

Repeat entries

While we're thinking about code, I think it might be cool to be able to put a flag on a generator that prevents duplicate entries being generated. (This is especially true of the IAWA Oracles.) It's not an urgent thing obviously, since all you have to do is reload the generator to get another "reroll", but it's something to think about. Anyway, great resource. More than one generator on a page?

I'm having trouble putting two generators on the same page. i.e. at the top of the page a bunch of plot seeds and then at the bottom a set of plot complications. Should I make a utility page of plot complications and have that "resolved separately" as they say? JDCorley 11:23, 1 September 2008 (PDT)

You can definitely have more than one generator on one page. Take a look at Animal or Tarot Card to see a few ways to have multiple tables in one page. each table starts with a semicolon-headed line naming the table. From the same page, you can simply refer to table name in single-brackets in your sgresults tag to show the result. From another page, you need to give the name of the page, followed by a period, followed by the table name in single-brackets in order to resolve it. Do you have a particular page you're having trouble with you'd like me to take a look at for you to help out? --MidnightLightning 13:02, 1 September 2008 (PDT)
MidnightLightning is right (Thanks Midnight!), but I think what was tripping you up over on the AoA generator was that you may not have more than one sgtable block. So I'm going to put your plotcomplications table in the same block as your other one, and you'll still be able to call it just fine from that page or any other page. Sorry for the confusion on this - hope that helps. --Dave Younce 15:38, 1 September 2008 (PDT)

Preformatted blocks

I am building a generator for Apocalypse World NPC Description. Quite suddenly, my generated entries are being formatted as preformatted blocks -- grey boxes with dashed borders and lines running off the right side of the screen, i.e. no word wrapping. Any idea why this is, and how I could get rid of the grey boxes? --Mikael

Responding to myself, found out that this effect was caused by a reference to [Apocalypse World Names.metatable]. Looking at that page, I could not see anything that would cause the effect. The workaround for me was to put bold quotes around the reference, which caused CSS to no longer hit the names. --Mikael

Mikael, that is happening because you have a leading space at the beginning of your line/table/entry - MediaWiki formats the line into that gray box when a line starts with a space. -Dave Younce (talk) 10:00, 29 December 2012 (PST)

Should the weapons hyperlink display the weapons generator, or a list of weapon generators like the other hyperlinks?

If you click the links for Descriptions, Character Concepts, or Places, you get a list of various generators. If you click the link for Weapon, you just get one generator.

  • Should we have a summary page for weapons?
  • Should such a page be linked from the main page?

--Dragonsdoom (talk) 08:44, 6 June 2014 (PDT)

Go ahead and build the summary page for weapons, and do link to it from the main page and the Treasure page. ToB (talk) 00:50, 7 June 2014 (PDT)
I don't have edit permission for the main page, but I have created the Weapons summary page and linked it to the Treasure page. Dragonsdoom (talk) 11:41, 12 June 2014 (PDT)
Done. ToB (talk) 04:40, 13 June 2014 (PDT)
